Why we love working with “non-green” clients

May 27

We try not to make it super obvious that our primary clients are green, forward-thinking and other "good for the planet/humanity/etc." groups. However if you average it out, it's usually about 50/50 with other types of businesses out there - mom and pop shops, new online entrepreneurs, you name it. We do have a strict policy about not working with companies that, for example, source material from questionable sources or are blatantly obvious about being bad for the environment (remind me to tell you the story about the guy who wanted us to help sell his "miracle" seal pup gel caps).

What's great about those clients is that they're a fountain of possibilities when it comes to greening the way they do business. Over the course of the project, it's a lot of fun to be able to examine their business practices and find small, subtle ways to make what they're doing just a little bit better, or cleaner, or people-friendly. Most often its helping them go paperless, or suggesting recycling practices that they didn't even know existed. Sometimes it's farther reaching, like helping a client find ways to become fair trade certified or identify a new supplier of organic vegetables.

We had to take a hard look at how we were marketing ourselves when we first started Agami. It seemed obvious at the time that promoting ourselves as a "green" marketing firm would turn away other companies who didn't have that mindset or though we were too treehugger-ish to be taken seriously. Surprisingly this hasn't been an issue (our Portfolio is evidence of that) so that might just be a sign that the values we've based our company around have truly gone mainstream.

And that would be just fine with us.
